Sometimes we look outside, toward our lives and the world, and it’s easy to be discouraged. Because we know things could be better, and should be better, we feel impelled to create change in any way possible. Although we give it all we’ve got, change is slow, if at all. A battle now ensues, between what we see on the inside and what we actually see on the outside. This is our dilemma. Having acknowledged this, we also know that the world and our lives do change over time, things do improve. The problem we face is that we do not feel connected to these changes. I can tell you that we are in fact connected to creating these necessary changes, but it is much more subtle than we realize. The question arises in our minds, “How can we be more connected and involved, indicating to us a new-found responsibility?”
What we must realize, at least initially, is that there is little we can do to effect change outside ourselves until we learn how to change the inside. In other words, there really is nothing wrong on the outside. This most important realization leads us to a required acceptance of the outside, and then the inner work can begin. When all is said and done, this is the only thing we are responsible for, the only thing in which we must engage. You see, the only battle that is happening in our lives and the world lies within. What must change, then, is who we believe ourselves to be. We can begin by accepting that we are two selves, not just one. We have a lower self, known as the ego or personality, and we have a higher self, known as the soul. These are the two voices that speak to us in our mind, and they’re always at odds. This is the battle that’s really going on, which part of ourselves is going to have the final say. My friends, it is the ego who believes that change can only happen on the outside, for only the outside world is real. The soul, on the other hand, knows that the inner life is the only reality, and this is where change really happens. The ego cannot know of a future, for it only knows of a past that has already been. Can you see that our identification with this kind of perception contains no possibility? Again, the ego only knows what has already been learned and established. Everything that is, is all there is, and nothing can ever change. The soul sees what is as well, but it also sees what must be changed in order to create the better. The ego creates a static imprisonment, and a level of discomfort that cannot be sustained. The soul, if we would allow, brings to our experience possibility, movement, and freedom from limitation. Which of these two voices feels more correct, which one feels better?
My friends, a battle inside us ensues, because the ego is not going to let go of the temporary power it has established very easily. You see, the illusion we live in is our ego telling us that it is the all powerful and fearless one, when in reality, it is the one generating all the fear in order to maintain its power over us. It is the ego who is afraid, not the soul. We know we want to feel better, we want to be free, we want to experience greater love. What we must know is that only our soul can provide it. If we continue to identify with our ego as the only reality, we will always be afraid and never move forward. It is the ego who is afraid, because it knows that the soul can and will take control, and has the capacity to guide us in a new direction, a new way of life. The ego, the part of us we have identified with for so long, believes it will be distinguished, no longer have any value, in fact the one who must give up and die. Oh boy, this is the deepest fear we have, this is the one! What you will find helpful here is to know, beyond any doubt, that nothing ever dies, it only changes form. When it’s time for the soul to take charge, the ego will relinquish its control, for it will know it has done its job, it has in fact done everything it can do. The fear of the ego will subside, for all life will be seen to continue, as it becomes part of the higher. We continue to exist, to exist as a new and better form. We simply become more of who we already are. It’s going to be ok, no part of us is going to die. We engage with the battle inside, a battle between the two selves. We heal the illusory division that exists there, for the two are actually one.
The warrior living within, a new and welcomed friend. This warrior is not the lower self or ego, it is our very soul. It is we as the soul who carry the power of light, and the light indeed cuts through all. With this power of light, we are able to see what can and must be overcome. We can do anything. Even our ego is welcome in this warrior light we have discovered, that is, if he or she can trust, and relinquish the control held for eons and a day. There must be a better way, there must be a better self. My companions, let the higher part of you assume control now, occasionally at first, then more consistently, and eventually always. Once we allow this process to happen, the two opposing selves living inside become one. Confusion and struggle end, for we have let go. You see, my fellow egos, we have done our job, and we have done it well. But, we are tired and can do no more. Now, it’s time to let a higher reality have the final say. This dedication, this willingness, allows our soul to transform our inner life, we become who we are. The power of light brings forward the love that eliminates all fear and limitation. The illusion ends. This is the only change that must happen, and it is something we have the power to decide today. Remember, there is no battle with the outside world, there is nothing wrong. Go within and let the soul win, for this is the power of God. Triumph is ours. No question remains. The light, love, and power of the soul is all hope and guarantee. Once the inner life of the soul is fully realized, we move out into the world and transform all life for the better. Indeed, for all eternity.
