Quiet time with your morning coffee, a walk in the woods or on the beach, or just sitting and enjoying a beautiful view are all forms of meditation, even though we may not realize it. The important thing for us to recognize is that it’s a time of inner reflection. These are times we spend just with ourselves, attempting to create a sense of peace and well-being. Inner reflection provides us with an opportunity to further the relationship we have with our own self. The benefits of these meditative experiences are not truly appreciated by many, so let’s take a look at a few:
Numerous physiological effects including a relaxed body and slower, deeper, more rhythmic breathing
Mental and emotional calmness and balance
Increased problem-solving skills
An increased awareness of “inner” experience as opposed to “outer” experience
A positive outlook on life
A general feeling of connectedness and well-being
A connection to the higher part of us becomes more possible
We can expect these types of benefits with a commitment to spending just a few minutes every day in some form of meditation or inner reflection. There is no need to formalize things here with yoga poses and such. Keep it simple. The main goal is to learn how to quiet the mind, as the many thoughts we have, distract us from the relaxed state of being we are trying to create. The most important thing is to eliminate as many distractions as you can. Turn off the devices and just sit quietly. Don’t attempt to do this for an hour or even thirty minutes until you get used to the process. You will be amazed at what even five minutes will provide for you. The following are a few steps to help you get started:
Sit quietly and close your eyes
Bring your attention to your breath and inhale slowly and deeply into your belly and then into your chest
Exhale slowly and deeply and begin to notice a natural rhythm
When your mind distracts you, return your attention to your breath
After a few minutes, slowly open your eyes and remain seated for an additional few minutes or so
Notice the calmness and centeredness you feel
Go about the business of the day and bring these good feelings with you
Keep in mind that in order to be successful with this practice, consistency is required. With a little time and a little determination, you will be rewarded with the benefits mentioned above. The ultimate goal is to achieve a connection with the higher part of yourself. This higher part of yourself wants you to be comfortable and successful in every aspect of living. Who doesn’t want that? We’ll be discussing this relationship in more detail at a later time. For now, spend some time with yourself and develop a new skill. It’s easier than you think and well worth it!
All my love and support, stay safe and be well
