“Masking – Apathy Is the Real Problem”

News 1074604 1920

If we accept the fact that we are all human and live in a physical world, we must realize that we are all subject to disease and contagion. There have been many epidemics and pandemics throughout our history, and Covid-19 is no exception. It is important for every person to take the current situation seriously by taking the necessary precautions to prevent massive infection and subsequent death on a global scale. It is difficult for all of us to change our behavior, but it is essential for our survival. Wearing a mask in public and keeping our distance from others are minimal and temporary inconveniences when we consider the bigger picture. Covid-19 has given us an opportunity to come together as one group and care about ourselves and others in a very significant way. This is common purpose. This is clearly an important time to be mature and responsible, and if we make the small sacrifices now, a better future awaits us. This too shall pass, as they say, and our lives will return to normal much sooner by taking these necessary steps today. We can do this. Let’s consider the following reminders to help us participate in a responsible and caring manner. Love-in-action is the key.

Our beliefs, no matter how important they are to us, will not save our lives. All political and religious viewpoints are theoretical at best. Just because we want something to be true doesn’t mean that it is true. The physical world in which we live is the important consideration here. When we adhere to our belief system so strongly that we ignore what is happening around us, we place ourselves and others in danger. What we believe to be true does not provide us with immunity.

It is true that we have personal rights and civil rights, and these are very important. Nobody wants to be controlled or told what to do by the government or any other institution, nor do we want anyone else’s beliefs to infringe upon our own. It is critical however to remember that the reverse is also true. No matter what our beliefs are, we do not have the right to jeopardize the rights and safety of others. In current society we cannot drive while intoxicated or physically assault another person, for example, so we must apply this reasonable logic to the virus as well.

Although younger people are not as susceptible to becoming seriously ill, they can still acquire the virus and spread it to others. I encourage all young individuals to show some respect and consideration for those who have come before them. The elderly has, to the best of their ability, tried to provide a better future for you through their various sacrifices. Show that you care by taking the appropriate actions today. I understand the need for social and sexual activity, but it can wait a little longer!

With the upcoming holiday season, the need for bonding with family and friends has our attention for sure, but we may have to put large gatherings on hold for now. I know how difficult this is, for I am just as “touchy-feely” as the next, but maybe we could show a bigger kind of love this year by protecting the health of those we care about. We can exercise some self-discipline and spend some time alone.

Science and medicine have always provided us with the means to a healthy and productive life. We can trust that they will do the same in our current situation. A cure for Covid-19 will be found in our near future with a scientifically proven vaccine. We can all do our part in the meantime by taking the precautions mentioned above.

This current crisis has presented us with a great opportunity to love and care for ourselves and others. A state of apathy is not helpful or advised at this critical time, so let’s do the right thing today. Better times lie ahead of us through responsible, everyday action!

All my love and support, stay safe and be well
