“Is It Possible to be Unbiased?”

A book 5178205 1920 (1)

It may be our ultimate goal to be unbiased in our approach to all things, but in order to achieve that, we must first be realistic. The reality, my friends, is that we all have an agenda of sorts, and this will continue to be the case for a very long time. The real question then is what we intend to do with this agenda. In other words, we must always be aware of our motivation. A true sense of realism suggests that we of course have a viewpoint on almost everything, and this is good, for it indicates our experience and what we have learned about ourselves and our life. It is wisdom we have acquired, for we have indeed discovered what is helpful, what can be considered our personal guide to success. However, what we discovered, or how we go about things, can also be viewed as our personal bias. This is a fact within our reality, and it is unavoidable, for we only know what we know, we can only use what is currently available to us. Again, this should not be viewed as any kind of limitation, or something that indicates a self-centeredness in which we intend to harm ourselves or others. The personal bias we have developed in our life journey merely suggests our individual path, what our life is about. So, we can accept bias to be a normal and natural part of our development. We will have opinions, and will certainly have our way of going about things! We get into trouble when we expect others to have the same views, to have the same agenda we have. Then, unfortunately, the wisdom we have acquired cannot be shared in a helpful or beneficial way. Our motivation shifts to that of self-interest and demand. In this way, our personal bias becomes damaging, not only to others and the world, but to ourselves as well. In order to avoid this, we must return to our original goal, that of establishing a more unbiased state of mind. Let’s take a look.

If we want to become more unbiased in our approach, we need to consider what’s involved. You see, being truly unbiased is about objectivity. It is objectivity that allows us to set aside our personal agenda for a moment, and allow others to express theirs. In this way, we recognize what they need. Then we have an opportunity to search our wisdom and bring forward that which is helpful. A true objectivity, an unbiased state of mind, happens when we listen. Real wisdom allows us to hold a space of love for others. This is the only agenda we really have. We have no need for others to see it our way, we simply suggest what has worked for us. This is how we remove our personal bias from the equation, and our interaction with others becomes more impersonal. My friends, much of our interaction with others is very personal, and therefore entirely subjective. In other words, we think we’re trying to help, but what we really want is to be heard ourselves. We want to feel important, we want to have our say. It is individual power we are hoping to obtain. This is not the way. To acquire real objectivity, to achieve an unbiased state of mind, we must step aside. Our personal agenda still has value, and it will always be there, but it must only be pursued within.

To achieve a greater objectivity, thereby releasing ourselves from excessive personal bias, is an important goal for all of us. But, we must recognize we’re not quite there yet! Yes, we need to apply this basic understanding toward our leaders as well. Those we count on the most, such as law enforcement officials, politicians, and religious leaders are subject to much personal bias. As difficult as it may, our teachers, our elders, and our perceived authority figures need to be viewed in the same way. Should we expect more from them, can we ask them to at least try to be unbiased? I think so. Can we expect others to be free of all personal agenda, hidden motivation, self-interest, and the like? Well, we should not expect anything if we’re unwilling to do it ourselves.

My friends, we can create a better objectivity, a more unbiased state of mind, when we get out of our own way. We can set our personal agenda aside and just listen. We can create an atmosphere of cooperation by maintaining a space of love and acceptance. If we find ourselves being pushy and demanding, we must take a deep breath, step back, and be quiet. If we notice our motivation is of pure self-interest, then we must understand we cannot be truly helpful. It’s ok, we can be patient and wait for a better time. This is wisdom expressed. Is it possible to be unbiased in our approach to all things? It is. You see, being truly unbiased is nothing more than seeing what can benefit all. We allow and are therefore willing. In this way, we best serve ourselves and all others. It is our journey together.
