This time of year always presents itself as an opportunity to go inward to our hearts and seek more spiritual or worldly values. It’s a time to step away from the material side of life, and show ourselves as the loving human beings we essentially are. A common theme to be found in all world religions is the idea of “Peace and Goodwill” as a foundation for spiritual growth. The expression of these higher spiritual values gives us the opportunity to experience ourselves as part of a greater whole. It is a way to set aside our differences, our individual uniqueness, and participate in a higher purpose we do indeed share.
My dearest friends, every human being desires peace in their life. Peace, as we have discussed before, can be found within our own hearts and minds with that essential inner focus. We find it through the acceptance of ourselves and our life conditions in the present moment. We also have the opportunity to accept others as well, by understanding that they, and certain world conditions to a large extent, are the part of our lives we may not be able to control or change. Accepting ourselves and our lives as they are right now does not negate the possibility for future growth and change, but rather, it gives us the time to assess and acknowledge where we are, thereby giving ourselves the opportunity to grow and move forward if we so choose. We also take the time to remember that our primary focus must always be on ourselves first, for this is the only way real change can begin. Fellow souls, we must learn how to live from the inside out, rather than from the outside in. If we allow ourselves to be ok with things as they are, you see, we provide for ourselves a starting point to build our lives anew. A critical part of this process of acceptance involves the need to forgive ourselves and others. This relegates the past to its proper location, the past. In this way, we are able to create a true sense of peace within our hearts, and a proper understanding about the necessity of giving will naturally follow. This allows us to give, from the heart, the love we all require. Let us allow the creation of peace and love be the definition of humanity’s common purpose and objective this season.
It is the peace and love we find in our hearts which creates the vehicle of goodwill so necessary in these difficult times. Goodwill always involves our actions and words, for we understand the need for a loving attitude in our approach to everyday living. Interestingly, our deepest desire to receive love is entirely dependent on our willingness to give love. You see, we cannot obtain for ourselves that which we are unwilling or unable to give to others. This simple truth warrants our most careful consideration. Our fear of others, our fear of needing to be together, can be attributed to the fear of loving and accepting ourselves. This must happen first if anything is to be truly given to any other. Remember, the understanding of ourselves, our lives, our world, begins within. It is self-love which is required in order to understand others and the world in which we live. Within the giving of this self-love to others can be found the healing of all difference and separation. The outer world, therefore, must always be understood as a reflection of that which exists in our own hearts and minds. In other words, when we see love and peace in ourselves, we will see it in the world. Goodwill toward ourselves, then goodwill toward others. Goodwill within, then goodwill without. Let’s decide this holiday season that love is real. Love will create the peace that we all seek, it is a guarantee. Let’s extend this love toward others, with an attitude of goodwill, in all action and word. A world of peace and cooperation will surely follow.
With all the uncertainty in the world today, we forget that the experience of such is the same for all. You see, we live in the same world, we have the same struggle in life as every other. The reality is, fellow souls, we have every reason to be hopeful now, and always, for each moment we live is indeed full of spiritual promise. Remember that patience, courage, and a simple willingness are required in our return to freedom, in our return to peace.
With an open heart, and a full clarity of mind, I wish all of you a safe and joyous holiday season, and I encourage all to express the peace and goodwill always available for the giving.
