The use of substances such as alcohol and drugs has certainly been a problem throughout human history, and this problem seems to be worsening in these times of great change. We have a lot of uncertainty that is upon us, and we find ourselves having difficulty coping in many ways, probably more often than we care to admit. It is one thing to have an occasional drink, or perhaps a little pot, as a leisurely activity, but quite another to use these things to “get through life”. I thought we would take a little time today and discuss this most important matter and, hopefully, gain a better perspective. If we are to achieve a greater understanding, we need to let go of all judgment, for in reality, there is no right or wrong here. We know that in order to resolve any issue, we must become aware of motivation and purpose in all that we do. Let’s take a look.
Ultimately, my friends, we can do whatever we would like to do. Our life experience is entirely up to us. This is not debatable. Our goal in the long term, however, is to have awareness about what we’re doing and why, for this is the key to self-understanding. Most of the time, we either do not know why we do what we do, or we do know and are dishonest about it. This is especially true concerning the use of substances. We all want a consistent sense of peace and well-being, it is something we all strive to achieve. What we must know is there is a way to achieve this without introducing something from the outside. Be patient, my friends, for this indeed takes a while to establish. In the meantime, we do what we have to do. The worst thing we could possibly experience is to be in a state of stress, anxiety or depression, for this will take its toll. But the effects of excessive use of substances will be much greater.
For those of us exploring the spiritual path, we wonder if the use of these various substances is acceptable. There is only one basic and simple truth we need to live by. Everything in moderation. Now, we all have our own ideas about what is considered moderate, but let’s be honest here. One, no more than two ounces of alcohol in any given day, and hopefully not every day. If we’re feeling alright, then we must abstain. If we’re not feeling well, then we must try to abstain and find a different way. This is the best advice I am able to give. No matter how far along you perceive yourself to be in your life path, no matter what kind of great ability you believe you have, the abuse of any substance will have detrimental effects eventually. The practical reality of it all is that our physical structures are not designed to handle high levels of toxicity long term. Unfortunately, we do have the capacity to destroy ourselves if we’re not careful. This not only includes our physical habits, but our emotional and mental patterns of behavior as well.
For the most part, we go about our lives trying to fix the outside. Don’t worry, we all do it! Unfortunately, if we want to create a long-lasting sense of peace, this can only happen within. Deep down, we all know this to be true. Every human being will reach a point in their life where self-confront must begin. This is the only way. My fellow companions, it is only our willingness to get started that is the difficult part. Once we begin the process, the perception of ourselves and our lives will indeed transform for the better. Once this process is complete, we are healed, and our current limitations that seem to be permanent will be gone forever. Again, it is a consistent peace we hope to establish, for our goal is to not be controlled or dependent on anything from the outside. It is the transformation of the inner life that transforms the outer. This is our promise. Is this a realistic goal? It has to be.
My friends, whatever you need to create in your life can be created by you. The impossible is not only possible, but likely. When you’re ready, accept where you are and decide to move forward. Always remember, I and many others stand beside you.
A clear mind is essential to successful living
