“Social Media – Help or Hinder?”

News 1074604 1920

As many of you may already know, social media platforms have their upside and downside. I thought we would consider some benefits in terms of what the original intent might have been, as well as some pitfalls or negative impact they have had on society as a whole. The overall creation of various technologies in our world is truly amazing. The higher intent of these developments always begins with the goal of improving the life conditions of humanity. We can clearly see this in the area of computer technology, for example, as it has provided us a way to connect with all parts of the world without the need to be physically present. Information concerning every conceivable aspect of human life and the world we live in is readily available at our fingertips. One of the vehicles of this technology was created to give us a new way to communicate and connect with others. Social media platforms are one means of achieving this capability. Let’s first take a look at how these platforms may be benefiting us, and then we’ll consider some potential problems:

It is a wonderful thing to be able to share what is happening in our lives through these platforms, especially when we are unable to physically be there. We can share photographs and videos or do some writing, and this is very helpful in staying connected with those we love.

It is a convenient means to stay updated on the news and what is happening in the world.

It is also a suitable vehicle for experts within our various institutions to provide information, guidance, and opinions on the important subject matter of the day.

The above examples are indeed a very positive means to stay connected and informed, but in many cases, we have lost sight of the benefits and have used these platforms for less than productive reasons instead. It is always a good idea to be aware of the possible harmful effects of any activity we engage in so that we can understand the effects our choices have on ourselves and others. Let’s consider just a few:

Unfortunately, many people, no matter what their age, have basically regressed into what I can only describe as a “high school” approach to their behavior and communication. The impersonal nature of the social media experience has allowed some individuals to be much more confronting than they would otherwise be. Many are using these platforms to attack and criticize others in a way that, quite frankly, can destroy someone’s life or reputation. Is this who we have become? This approach to human interaction is unhealthy and undesirable. My suggestion is that if you are unable to speak your mind in a physically present, face-to-face manner, do not push the send button. Perhaps we could return to some sense of loving civility. It is needed more now than ever before!

Every parent is aware of how vulnerable and insecure their children are. My fear is that a child’s value has become dependent on how many likes or dislikes they have on their page. The other fear is whether a child can really develop adequate social skills without actual physical, human interaction. This is how someone learns about body language, facial expression and tone of voice, for example. I hope these social platforms have not created a whole generation of socially inept individuals.

The social media companies themselves have created the above conditions from pure greed. It is so unfortunate that, yet, another human dependency has been created by the need of some to acquire more money and power. I also firmly believe that free speech needs to be re-examined. It is my understanding that threats, as vague as they may be, are against the law.

There are still many people, for whatever reason, that are unable to think for themselves and can therefore be exploited and manipulated by those with selfish interest. The executives of these platforms are failing miserably in this regard.

I don’t know about you guys, but the first list is more appealing to me than the second. It always takes time to iron out the bugs with any new development, whether it be our technology or our behavior. It is my hope that faith in the human heart will always prevail. Love and respect for our fellow men and women will assure this! Have a safe holiday season.

All my love and support, stay safe and be well
